Along about March, the spring thaw awakens the sugar bush and the sap begins to flow, bringing with it new life for the once dormant maple tree and a gift of flavorful sweetness, rich in trace minerals, that my friends over at Coombs Family Farm boil into thesyrup that makes my granola taste so good. Ahh. Nuts, Nuts, and More Nuts. Without the nuts, could you even call it Nutty Steph's? But beyond that delicious, maple-coated crunch lies deep nutrition. Almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts can help make a healthy heart and brain, and their protein offers long lasting energy to keep you going till lunchtime. No wonder I'm nuts about 'em. Sunflower Seeds and Oil. When it comes to B vitamins sunflower seeds have ‘em all: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B9 (folate), plus vitamin E, Iron, Zinc and oleic acid. But I like ‘em because they are so cute and I feel like a chipmunk when I eat them, and I picture their beautiful sunflower mothers waving in the summer sun and I smile. Oats. We all know they're good for us; lowering cholesterol, cleaning our colon, filling us with long-lasting high-protein energy. But all oats are not created equal.
